This is one of the most difficult topics to write on so far, no doubt my write-ups are nudges from the Holy Spirit, but this was more of scolding than nudging. It’s a topic that I’m so guilty of, I have fallen short of good time management that has adversely affected my prayer life.
To improve, I have learnt to use certain moments to pray so that I stop falling short. The Holy Spirit has taught me to pray not as a ritual but more effectively. You see, God understands phases of our lives, He sees our schedules and struggles.
My current phase is the early stages of motherhood, where I have to ensure supervised crawling, sleep can be gold and so many other sacrifices I have to make. For you it might be that you have to work all week as a frontline worker, and in fact, only time you have to yourself is your drive to work. So how do we consciously pray effectively with all the busyness of life and the current happenings.
“pray without ceasing,”
I Thessalonians 5:17 NKJV
You probably think it’s really impossible to pray without ceasing, you might think when the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write it to the Thessalonians, life was easy and people were not busy. Well, I believe they were also very busy with different obligations they were committed to, including church. Maybe there was no such thing as pandemics, epidemics or they probably just grew their own food in their gardens and had nothing to worry about, I believe it wasn’t so.
So what do we do?, we use our schedules to our advantage, it might mean sacrificing some screen time, some sleep, praying while driving or whatever adjustments you can make, to edify ourselves in the Spirit. Enough is enough, we need to stop cheating ourselves and start to maximize proactive prayer any and everywhere. Isn’t it so amazing, that you can’t forget the Holy Spirit at home, He’s with you everywhere you go.
You don’t need eloquence, don’t let the devil tell you you’re not eloquent, keep praying in understanding and in the Spirit, don’t let him shut you up, sing in tongues if you can. As a child of God, you are a temple the Holy Spirit of God dwells, engage Him. Keep praying till you have the confidence to stop stuttering. The Holy Spirit is a helper. When you pray in the Spirit, you edify yourself, fear, anxiety, worry, sickness fly away.
“He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.”
I Corinthians 14:4 NKJV.
We can develop a lifestyle of prayer where we pray not because something bad happens (reactive prayer) but pray into the future and in the will of God (proactive prayer) so much that He orders our steps, shows us things to come including His promises from His Word.
I have used my schedule as a mother to develop a lifestyle of proactive prayer. For example, my son’s bath time is also my prayer time, I pray in tongues and understanding and I prophesy over him. Dishwashing time can be worship time.
What will you do to improve and maximize a proactive prayer life?
