Many times we find ourselves afraid or bothered about the least important things in life. Even when they are important things worth worrying about, they can take away our joy, peace and well-being. We often lose sleep, calories and what not over issues or circumstances that create fear in our hearts. Baseless fear is the fear we create for ourselves. I just recently became a new Mom and baseless fear has been something I have found myself doing so often. I became so worried or fearful just by staring at my baby and observing things that are completely normal or will correct itself as the baby grows. I remember all of the negative thoughts I let consume me after baby and I were discharged from the hospital. I let my mind think about his eyes, stool, hair, head and everything else. To worsen it, I kept googling my observations which increased my fears based on ‘google diagnosis’. You might find it amusing that all of my observations were confirmed completely normal by the pediatrician at his next appointment. It became obvious that my fear was completely baseless. One of the major causes of baseless fear is ignorance. Although I googled my observations and was curious about the what and why of my observations I didn’t use the right resource. As children of God, our right resource is the Word of God, the Bible. 2 Timothy 1:7, tells us ‘For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love, and of power, and of a sound mind’. It’s a Bible verse I have learned to confess to myself often when I’m worried or fearful about anything. I have decided to choose to trust God completely without fear. I have decided not to engage in baseless fear but fearless trust. I like to describe baseless fear as being worried about unemployment when in fact you already got the employment in your mail, but you just haven’t checked it. Our confirmation to cultivate a habit of fearless trust is in the Word of God, we just have to consciously read and confess it often so as to remind ourselves. God does not want us to be tormented with fear when we should be basking in love, joy, peace and well-being. God wants us to be brave and confront every fear with His promises from His Word. It is time we conquer fear starting with the little things, or we spend the rest of our lives in fear. There will always be something to worry or fear in life, could be family, career or situations but we must make conscious effort to erase fear. We must deliberately seek courage in God’s Word through prayers, confessions through the knowledge of His Word and the assurance that He is with us and He cares for us.
